Optimized Control Structure for a Wastewater Treatment Benchmark

چکیده
In this paper, we define and implement the design of an optimized control structure for the activated sludge process given as COST/IWA benchmark simulation model No.1. Emphasis is given to the identification of controlled variables that contribute to minimize economic costs while the effluent requirements are met. This is achieved considering the selfoptimizing procedure as reference method for the controlled variables selection. The proposed optimal control strategy consists of multivariable PID loops which manipulate the airflow rate in the aerobic basins, the nitrate and sludge recirculation flows and the waste sludge flow proportionally to the influent flow such that the overall cost function is minimized. Dynamic simulations validate the resulting optimized controller structure, showing that minimal costs can be achieved.

Control Strategy Evaluation for Combined N and P Removal Using a Benchmark Wastewater Treatment Plant
The COST wastewater treatment plant simulation benchmark is a useful example for evaluation of control strategies aiming at improving biological nitrogen removal. In the SMAC project, the phosphorus removal process, based on the ASM2d model, was added as an extension to the existing benchmark wastewater treatment plant. This results in an example for evaluation of control strategies for combine...
متن کاملMulti-criteria Evaluation of Control Strategies for Wastewater Treatment Processes
This paper deals with the simulation Benchmark multi-criteria evaluation of the performance of control strategies for biological wastewater treatment plants. In particular, the usefulness of more compact multi-criteria measures is discussed. For an illustrative selection of control strategies, an economic index weighing operating costs appears more powerful than a grey-scale presentation approa...
متن کاملBenchmarking Sequencing Batch Reactors for Wastewater Treatment
A benchmark for the test of control scenarios of sequencing batch reactors (SBR) used for wastewater treatment is proposed. The plant layout includes a buffer tank for wastewater storage in front of the SBR. Performance criteria based mainly on the quality of the effluent are given. The use of the benchmark is illustrated by the study of the effects on the effluent of the control of dissolved o...
متن کاملModel Predictive Control of Wastewater Treatment Plants: application to the BSM1 Benchmark
Linear Quadratic Dynamic Matrix Control has been applied to the Benchmark Simulation Model 1 (BSM1) wastewater treatment plant to maintain the effluent quality within regulations-specified limits. Good performance was achieved under steady influent characteristics, especially concerning the nitrogen-related species. In presence of influent disturbances the behavior was less satisfactory but the...
متن کاملBenchmark Simulation Model no. 1 with a Wireless Sensor Network for Monitoring and Control
The implementation of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for wastewater treatment plant monitoring and control is rare in the literature. Nevertheless, there seem to be some good reasons for considering this application, since WSNs can easily supply several point measurements and keep track on a single variable over a wide area. This report describes a merged simulator, which is a fusion between a...
